This research aims to examine patterns of the meaning extension of Polysemy based on the awareness of elementary school students about the prototypical meaning of word. First, we investigated the awareness about the meaning extension of ‘눈[eye]’ in Korean. As a result, it turned out that the meaning of the word is not intended to be extended in unilinear, such as person, object, activity, space, time, quality, but it is extended into more complex. The meaning of ‘눈[eye]’ are extended in both directions in Korean. In other words, one is direction that extends the meaning of ‘person>animals>abstract’ and the other one is the meaning extension of ‘person>objects>space’. Elementary school students are aware of the latter than the former closer. Therefore, considering the awareness of the word of the elementary school students is desirable to teach the separation of these.
