The purpose of this study is to examine how apparently diverse and different meanings of up are related to one another systematically. To do so, the meanings of up are analyzed in detail in respect to the prototypical theory, the method of meaning extension, ‘metaphor’, and the cognitive process of polysemy. Based on the historical origin of up, the concept of the upper direction and paused position from the upper direction is perceived as the prototypical meaning since it is the most readily depictable and conceptualized in physical and spatial domain. In addition, the prototypical meaning of up gives rise to the concepts of ‘vertical sense of up’, ‘slanting sense of up’, and ‘horizontal sense of up’ depending on the different paths in a physical and spatial domain. These senses of up derived through cognitive conceptualization can be enlarged by the device of metaphor, inducing the senses of ‘upness’, ‘moreness’ and ‘closing gap’ in an abstract domain. These diverse meanings are demonstrated on the continuum as a semantic network to describe how they are associated with one another systematically.
