This article interrogates North Korean cinema at the nexus of a complex interplay between the local and the global, the national and the transnational by going beyond the prevailing tendency that considers North Korean cinema as an entity disconnected from global film contexts. Focusing on the production and reception of two films, A Schoolgirl’s Diary (2006) and Comrade Kim Goes Flying (2012), it looks particularly into North Korean cinema’s forays into the international film scene beginning in the 1980s when its connections with global cinema became more complex and multilateral as its transnational, global connections began to move beyond socialist internationalism that had informed much of the border-crossing aspects of North Korean cinema in previous decades. Instead of simply reading the global travels of the two films as a certain symptom of contemporary North Korean society, the article endeavors to illustrate and discover a historical trajectory of the global dimension of North Korean cinema by probing them in relation to the multi-decade efforts of North Korean filmmakers to break into the global film scene. This article ultimately seeks to expand the limited understanding of North Korean cinema that confines it within the nation’s boundaries by examining it in association with other film cultures both within and beyond its own national borders, in the global contexts, and to develop a richer film-historical account.
