This paper is a study on the Tanka magazine ‘ポトナム’(Potonamu), which was published on the Korean Peninsula in the Japanese colonial period. As a unique form of Japanese poetry, Tanka poems in Korea were mainly written by Japanese people who had come to the Korean Peninsula, and were published in Japanese newspapers and magazines in the early 1910s. However, the Tanka form on the Korean Peninsula fully emerged with the publication of magazines which specialized in it. According to the research to this point, there was a total of six Tanka magazines published on the Korean Peninsula in the Japanese colonial period, with ‘Potonamu’ being the first in 1922. Therefore, there is a strong case that ‘Potonamu’ is the most important historical source for discovering the history of the Tanka on the Korean Peninsula. However, there has been no research conducted on the historical development of ‘Potonamu’, nor on the analysis of the Tanka works it published. This paper sets out to fill this gap. ‘Potonamu’ was published by Keijo publishers from its first issue in April 1922 until June the following year. From July 1923 to 1945 the magazine was published in Tokyo. First, this study reviews the early historical developments of ‘Potonamu’ and the Tanka in its Keijo period. It also analyzes works by authors who contributed to ‘Potonamu’ that are contained in the co-authored Tanka collection ‘Shahkeisyu’, published in 1923. The actual publication period of ‘Potonamu’ on the Korean peninsula was very short. However, it helped establish influential Tanka circles in Joseon, and also facilitated the emergence of famous Joseon Tanka poets in the period from the 1920s to the 1940s, in this way faithfully carrying out its role as a national Tanka magazine of the time.
