In Paradise Lost, Milton applied his poetic imagination to describe the story of the fallen angel Satan, life in Eden, and the disobedience of Man, based on the rather brief depiction in the Bible. One of the key challenges that Milton would have faced in writing this epic must have been how to describe spiritual beings such as God, the angels and Satan, and how to describe settings that the readers would not have experienced, such as Eden and Paradise. Therefore, the process of accommodation becomes the key in this endeavor to ‘say the unsayable.’ The term accommodation originates from theological term which refers to how God has adopted ways that humans can understand and respond to in order to communicate with the humanity, although God himself is an inconceivable and unknowable deity. This paper aims to analyze how Milton speaks of the unsayable through accommodation.
