While historically contextualizing Milton’s Samson Agonistes in the politically polarized culture of the Restoration, this paper argues that contrary to the traditional reception of the drama as an anti-feministic work, Samson Agonistes envisions Milton’s attempt to redefine a true heroism and to challenge the traditional valorization of masculinity. Particularly noting Milton’s ingenious use of circumcision metaphor, this paper tracks down the progress of Samson’s male identity from one determined by external bodily features to the one characterized by Christian faith and inward awakening. The paper concludes by suggesting that Milton’s rewriting of Samson’s story is one of the stellar examples that Milton, guided by the spirit of Reformation, pushes the envelope of gender and male identity.
