This essay examines the meanings of Jesus’ silence and the ineffable in Milton’s Paradise Regained and the ways in which they reveal the theme and vision of the work. The conflict between Jesus and Satan in this poem is not physical but verbal, which is waged in a desert that is also an interior psychological battleground. They compete by exchanging biblical quotations and rhetorical language rather than physical blows. However, silence and the ineffable as well as language in this conflict are very significant in that they contain deeper meanings which serve to show Milton’s vision of redemption by Jesus Christ, a second Adam. Throughout the temptations Jesus speaks God’s word instead of his own word and then remains silent. His silence and waiting signify his respect for God’s providence and will, and, at the same time, for God’s appointed time, Kairos. The hidden presence of the ineffable manifested in this work is implicit in the language of Jesus and the methods by which he frustrates Satan’s temptations. Satan cannot understand the meanings of the ineffable because of his spiritual darkness. He yearns to grasp the nature of Jesus as the son of God. But he does not have the ability to grasp the ineffable complexity of the Son-of-God paradigm wrapped in the living incarnation of the Word itself. This is an important reason why Satan is excluded from the grace and redemption of God. Milton’s real theme and vision are hidden in Jesus’ silence and the presence of the ineffable in this work.
