This study aims to illustrate lexical phenomena that emerged in the process of settling or disappearing of modern Korean neologisms by analyzing the development of modern synonyms appearing after the opening of the port. Among the several types of synonyms, we discuss the synonymous relations between transitional words and borrowing words, and between Chinese loanwords and Japanese loanwords. Transitional words are the type of words that have only undergone semantic changes from the traditional meaning to modern meaning while maintaining their forms. This paper examines the synonymous relations between the native transitional word binu (soap) and the loanword seokgam (石鹼), and the Sino-Korean transitional word usan (umbrella) and the borrowed word bakjui-usan (蝙蝠傘). Moreover, we analyze the relationship between Chinese and Japanese loanwords referring to timepieces, which include jong(鐘) and pyo(票ㆍ鏢), and sigye(時計), respectively. For this purpose, the newspapers including Hanseongsunbo and the dictionaries published from the 1880s to the 1950s are examined.
