There are five origins of cat’s names in Korea, China and Japan. The first is the theory that the origin of the cat's name in Korea, China and Japan lies in the cat’s cry. The cat was named after the cry of a cat called “Meow Meow” in Korea, “Miao Miao” in China, and “Neu Neu” in Japan. The second origin came from calling a cat by another animal’s name. Koreans wished for a long life by calling cats ‘Butterflies’. Japan called them ‘Tora’ because they were animals like tigers. Third, the name was given to describe the appearance of a cat. “Sosanye” was a nickname for a cat from a lion, “Gaho” from a tiger, and “Gari” and “Lino” from a wildcat. It is also said that another origin stems from a word that expresses the characteristics of cats. All of Korea, China and Japan believe it originated from the fact that it is a strange animal that catches mice well. In Japan, however, there is an interpretation that “Neko” has emerged from a cat’s sleeping habit. Finally, there is a story that it stemmed from the name of a remaining Koryo people in Japan.
