This paper examines the meaning about the cat’s being nameless in I Am a Cat. Everyday life mechanisms represented by “normalness, familiarity and permanence” can be interpreted as the author’s insight which awakens the reality, identity, and permanence of “name” by being nameless blocking the illusion of permanence, and insight into existence. Being nameless including deficiency is a cat’s objectified, existential self-awareness and does not equate possession of name, knowledge, appearance, power and ability to one’s own existence, so it is not bound by anxiety or uncertainty. The objective and relatively self-aware attitude of the cat’s to look at himself and the outside world can be compared to Soseki’s ‘Jikohonni’ in that the cat recognizes and maintains an objective and relatively independent attitude toward the inside world and outside world. When the cat’s being nameless is related to Toya’s entrapment and liberation in Nowaki, the cat’s attitude is a form of liberation from self-reliance regardless of greed and obsession as the consciousness of the object and subject’s desire is reorganized in the flow of consciousness that faces death. It can be said that it aims for selflessness in relationships and situations.
