This study provides an input-based account of the learnability of English alternating unaccusatives for Korean high school learners. More specifically, the study adopted an analytic model of fossilization, which examines the learnability, and for that matter, fossilizability, of a linguistic target in light of the markedness of the learners’ first language (L1) and the robustness of second language (L2) input vis-à-vis the target structure. Each of the two dimensions is analyzed in terms of two sub-dimensions of frequency and variability. The Korean alternating unaccusatives, examined by consulting the existing literature, were construed as frequent but variable features, and hence quite unmarked in nature. To determine the robustness of L2 input, 15 high school English textbooks in Korea were randomly selected and analyzed, focusing on 22 alternating unaccusatives probed in previous research conducted in the Korean English as a foreign language (EFL) environment. The target unaccusatives were found to be infrequent, but highly variable, which rendered the input non-robust. Taken together, these results showed that the English alternating unaccusatives fall in the fossilization zone projected by the model, suggesting the need of sufficient pedagogical attention in terms of both positive and negative evidence.
