Several industrial complexes have been established in South Korea and China during their industrialization and economic development; at the same time, the odors released from these industrial complexes caused popular discontent among neighboring residents. In this study, residents living in the industrial complexes in South Korea and China were selected as subjects of an empirical analysis on the cognition degree of odor; In particular, we analyzed the factors affecting odor intensity. Our study was based on the responses of 127 Chinese and 152 South Korean people living near the Nanjing and Ochang industrial parks, respectively. The results revealed that the perception of Chinese and South Korean residents was affected by different sets of factors. In the former case, the major factors in order of importance were ‘Danger awareness’, ‘Economic loss’, and ‘Trust’; in the latter case, they were instead ‘Danger awareness’, ‘Development’, ‘Economic benefit’, and ‘Trust’. A multiple regression analysis demonstrated that odor perception in both Chinese and South Korean residents was accentuated if they possessed an environmental ‘Danger awareness’. Additional regression analyses showed that the odor experience in itself had no significant impacts on the resident's awareness of odor intensity in South Korea, while it had significant effects in China.
