As mental health concerns continue to surge as an epidemic, arguably exacerbated in the present and the near future due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there is a growing need to better understand the impact of antidepressants on individuals with mental disorders. Depression is one of the most significant mental disorders worldwide and is estimated that more than 350 million people have depression worldwide. Many kinds of marketable antidepressants are available, due to side effects of those medications, for example, cognitive deficiency, obesity, or sexual malfunction, the therapeutic performance of those antidepressants is not completely sound or satisfactory. Thus, alternative approaches including folk herbs such as Hypericum perforatum commonly known as St. John’s Wort or increased intake of functional ingredients and antioxidants from fruits and vegetables are of interest as potential antidepressants. However, it is necessary to scientifically verify the antidepressant effect of these natural products, and efficacy evaluation guidelines for that verify should be established.
