The adverb ‘HAISHI’ has been known to represent two meanings: ‘continuous’ and ‘choice’. However, depending on the researchers, the analysis of the relationship between ‘continuous’ and ‘choice’ meanings varies. First of all, Peng & Hu(2009) believes that ‘HAISHI’ initially meant ‘continuous’, but as the ‘continuous’ meaning was weakened, the subjective element was involved, and the ‘continuous’ meaning was eliminated again, resulting in a pure ‘choice’ meaning. On the other hand, Li(2019) argued that ‘continuous’ and ‘choice’ meanings are not directly related to each other because they are the outcomes of different development processes, and that the semantic feature of the predicate determines whether ‘HAISHI’ means ‘continuous’ or ‘choice’. However, when reviewing their discussions, it can be confirmed that the two meanings are closely related to each other, and that it is difficult to find the pure ‘choice’ meaning without ‘continuous’ meaning. We argue that the ‘choice’ meaning does not exist, and all the usage of the adverb ‘HAISHI’ can be seen as representing ‘continuous’ in a broad sense. The meaning of ‘continuous’ of ‘HAISHI’ can be divided into the meanings of ‘continuity of situation’, ‘continuity of expectation’, ‘continuity of criteria’.
