The purpose of this paper is to trace grammaticalization of the differences between the propositions of yaobu and haishi, and to illustrate them by showing cognitive explanations and graphical representations. The discussion is summarized as follows.
The ‘yaobu’ derived from ‘meaning of selection’ is an exclusive choice proposal for a known, predictable selection term, and therefore can be new and sudden to the listener. ‘haishi’ derived from ‘meaning of continuation’ can be said to be a selected proposal in a known or predictable selection term. The selectable items are predictable by the listener in the context. Through ‘yaobu’, the listener can deduce that the speaker has a new suggestion, not a group of existing candidates that are mutually shared by context, culture, and common sense, and can be understood as a speaker"s change of position. On the other hand, ‘haishi’ recognizes that the speaker has selected one of the options that he/she expected and makes it possible to deduce that it is the optimum choice of the speaker. Therefore, ‘yaobu’ is a new alternative proposal that is not a continuous or predictable selection term with past experience, and ‘haishi’ is the best proposal through comparison of selectable candidates.
