Now Wangpi is famous for the Commentary of Laozi. He, however, had maintained a remarkable reputation as a interpreter of the Book of Change before Neo-Confucian established their own interpretation on it in Song Ming dynasty. Wangpi was classified as a taoist due to wonderful commentary for Laozi. Is it right? Wangpi shows us his direction and summary with Summation of Laozi. Hereby Wangpi emphasizes the status of shapelessness and namelessness until shape and name come to the present world. The status of shapelessness and namelessness is not the absolute nothingness but a start and a root of existence. Therefore Wangpi does not hesitate to give a status of patriarchic origin to the nothingness. The nothingness is a lord, and a lord is one, so the nothingness becomes one in his conclusion. Laozi claims the third situation above relativities. It is tao. Wangpi, however, let us choose one between two. It is the way of dualistic distinction which does grasp the root between root and branch. Because Wangpi’s theory of root and branch unfolds a value judgment, it is attractive for later Neo-Confucians who assert the principle(li) and its activities(qi).
