Hyoongbae, an insignia badge, is attached to the official uniform or robe to distinguish the status and rank of the wearer. This study reviewed the system and patterns of official"s sangbok Hyoongbae in the Ming Dynasty. The study results are as follows. Since the first document that stipulated the Hyeongbae system in the Ming dynasty was 『Liyi dingshi』, published in the 20<SUP>th</SUP> year of the Hongwu Emperor, this study proposed to enact it as the year of the Hyoongbae system. In the early days of the Hyoongbae system, two ranks used one to three patterns. However, in 1537, it was changed to an exclusive method using one rank for one pattern. Due to these changes, it is presumed that the combination of tiger and leopard patterns was separated into a tiger pattern and a leopard pattern. The images of the Hyoongbae in 『Da Ming Huidian』, which was written in the Wanli Emperor period, were revised based on the Zhengde Emperor period version. The Hyoongbae pattern of the Wanli Emperor period was more realistic and lively than the Zhengde Emperor period and was arranged in harmony with the background. The size of the focal point pattern was depicted as large in the Zhengde Emperor period version and small in the Wanli Emperor period version. It can be assumed that the Zhengde Emperor period version emphasized the focal point pattern, and the Wanli Emperor period version placed weight on the harmony between the focal point and the background. The image of the Hyoongbae of 『Sancai Tuhui』 was different from 『Da Ming Huidian』 in the state and number of the focal point patterns, etc. This study provides a theoretical background for the emergence of a tiger patterned Hyoongbae in the middle of the 16<SUP>th</SUP> century in the Joseon Dynasty.
