The purpose of this study is to establish a criteria of the evaluation of civil official's birds badges in Joseon dynasty. Badges are classified into 4 periods according to their forms. At the first period, a peacock badge for the first rank, a wild goose badge for the second rank, and a silver pheasant badge for the third rank were supposed to be wore by the rules, respectively, but only egret badges are found as remaining. At the second period, after the early 17th century, crane badges were added to the list of badges of the first period. At the third period, after the early 18th century, Dangsang officials wore crane badges while Dangha officials wore silver pheasant badges. The fourth period was set in the late 18th century and Dangsang officials wore the badges with a couple of cranes while Dangha officials wore the badges with one crane.
Identification of the bird motif from badges can be obtained by characteristics on heads and tails of various kinds of birds. The crane can be identified by a big red spot of the pate and black tails while the peacock can be identified by the round haired feather and the spots in tails. The wild goose can be identified by its plain pate, a simple tail feather, and its brown colored body. On the other hand, the silver pheasant has the characteristics of long haired feathers and long tail feathers while the egret has the characteristics of long haired feathers, a simple tail feather, and its white colored body.
