Bergson’s theory of mystic and Deleuze’s theory of sorcerer, both of them seem to be talking about the human ability to transform himself beyond the actual condition which Nature has created for him. The common foundation of these two theories is Bergson’s idea about the coexistence of diverse rhythms of duration. The central task of this article is therefore to reveal how far these two theories, which started from this common foundation, accompanied the same path together, but where and how they diverged from each other. We believe that what Bergson and Deleuze want to do by their philosophy is to lead people to be able to transcend our natural human conditions. Therefore, we try to show in this article that these two theories are conceived to realize this aim of philosophy in a concrete way.

신비주의자에 대한 베르그손의 이론과 마법사에 대한 들뢰즈의 이론, 이두 이론은 공히 우리 인간이 자연이 만들어 놓은 우리 자신의 현실적인 모습을 넘어 새로운 모습으로 우리 자신을 변형시키는 문제에 대해 이야기하고 있는 것으로 보인다. 현대 철학의 일반적인 성향은 그런 것에 대해 매우 무관심한 듯 보이지만, 이 두 이론은 우리 인간의 이와 같은 〈자기변형〉의 문제가 자연 자체의 본성으로부터 우리에게 주어지고 있음을 말하려 하고 있는 것처럼 보이는 것이다. 이 두 이론이 제시하는 이와 같은 주장의 공통의 토대가 되고 있는 것, 그것은 수많은 서로 다른 지속의 리듬들이 존재하고 있음을 말하는 베르그손의 이론이다. 이 글은 이두 이론이 어떻게 이 공통의 토대로부터 출발하여 그들 각자의 길로 나아가게 되는지를 밝히려 하는 것이다. 그러므로 이 공통의 토대로부터 출발한 이 두 이론이 어디까지 같은 길을 함께 동행하며, 그렇지만 어디에서부터 어떻게 해서 서로 갈라지게 되는지를 밝히는 것이 이 글의 중심 과제가 되었다. 들뢰즈도 동의할 수 있을 테지만, 베르그손은 철학의 궁극적인 소명이란 우리 인간에게 우리 자신의 자연적 조건을 넘어설 수 있게 하는 것이라고 말하고 있다. 오늘날 많은 사람들은 철학의 가능성을 두고 이와 같은 전망을 품는 것에 대해 매우 회의적일 것이다. 한때 인류는 무지와 맹목적 미신의 위험으로부터 벗어나기 위해 지성의 힘에 의존해야 했던 것이 사실이다. 하지만 지성이라는 것이 그것 너머로 도약할 수 있는 가능성 마저를 함부로 부인하거나 맹목적으로 거부할 수 있게 해주는 것이라고 생각하는것, 이러한 소위 〈지성주의적 성향〉 역시 잘못된 편견에 사로잡혀 있는 무서운 병폐일 수 있다고 우리는 생각한다. 이 글은 우리 인간이 지성이라는 우리 자신의 자연적 조건 너머로 도약하는 것이 과연 가능하지, 만약 가능하다면 그것의 의미는 무엇인지를 생각해보기 위해 쓰인 것이다.
