Background/Aims
There is ongoing debate whether perioperative bleeding and transfusion adversely affect the prognosis of gastric cancer patients. The purpose of this study was to assess the causal relationship between blood transfusion and oncologic outcomes.
Methods
We retrospectively reviewed 2905 patients who underwent curative gastrectomy for stage II/III gastric cancer from 2006 to 2015. The risk factors for blood transfusion were identified using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. After propensity-score matching (PSM) using these risk factors, long-term oncologic outcomes were compared between the patients with and without transfusion.
Results
Of 2905 patients who underwent curative gastrectomy, 543 (18.7%) patients received perioperative blood transfusion.
