This paper reads Ed Bok Lee’s poetry book Mitochondrial Night and explores his new ecological imagination represented as mitochondria. Ed Bok Lee is a poet rarely discussed within the frame of American ecological poetry. Although he does not explicitly reveal the problems concerned with environmental crisis issues, his poems searching for the roots of his existence going back through mitochondria emphasize and envision ‘humananimal-ecological interconnectedness.’Especially focusing on “Mitochondrial Evening,”this paper pays attention to his mitochondrial imagination, which senses the roots of existence leaned on “femininity” and evokes the “cultural memory” of “mourning.” In these two directions, Ed Bok-Lee’s poems, inviting readers to appreciate the public value of poetry in this era of pandemic, expand the horizon of ecological poetry and become a poetic praxis of environmental justice.
