This study is about On-duty Salary Payment System of Eoyeong-Gun(御營軍), one of the central army of Joseon in the 17th century. Eoyeong-Gun, which was incepted in a situation where military conflicts with Later Jin(後金), steadily reinforced in accordance with changes in domestic and foreign circumstances. It was during King Hyojong(孝宗)"s reign that Eoyeong-gun"s formation, command system, and military serⅤice method were systemized on a large scale.
Eoyeong-Cheong(御營廳, Eoyeong-gun"s headquarters) disposed Gyeompachong(兼把摠) in the province to take full advantage of Sogobungunbeop(束伍分軍法). The military officers of capital were divided into commanding officers(領軍將官) and non-commanding officers(無軍將官), depending on whether they lead soldier. This was an effort to minimize financial expenditures, and remnant of the command system in the early Joseon Dynasty.
In order to financially assist military service of Jeong-Gun(正軍, regular soldier), one Jabo(資保) and two Gwan-Napbo(官納保) were assigned to every Jeong-Gun. Jabo supported expenses for long-distance travel of Jung-Gun and Gwan-Napbo was in charge of Jeong-Gun"s provisions. The government, which valued the issue of paying salaries, included intermediate expenses such as transportation and storage costs in Gwan-Napbo"s tax payment details and stipulated the payment method in detail. In the late 17th century, the financial situation of Eoyeong-Cheong improved. Also the external situation stabilized and the national finances aggravated. As a result, Eoyeong-Gun’s On-duty Salary Payment System was regarded as an exemplary case for the central army system and was applied to other central army.
