It is necessary for us to discover and illuminate our predecessors’ reading of the Bible in the early stage of Korean Christianity, in order to further develop Korean biblical scholarship. Sejong Lee is one of the targets whose life and teachings are analytically investigated in this study, with a special attention to his reading of the Bible in general, and the New Testament in particular. Most remarkable in his conversion, as he gradually extended his experience of reading the Bible, is that he immediately put into practice what he learned from Jesus in the Gospel. From the awakening experiences of biblical teachings, as it develops further, his spirituality has been dynamically advanced in such a way that abandons his private possessions, like Jesus, and nourishes ecological vision to have compassion to all living creatures. In light of New Testament theological matrix, his Christian faith based on reading and meditating the sacrificial love of Christ is characterized by such themes as Pauline idea of imitatio Christi (focused on altruistic asceticism), Jesus’ practice of familia Dei (pursued by his reconstruction of faith community), and radical asceticism somehow motivated by his ardent passion to take a part in the national disaster of Japanese colonialism. Viewed in a critical angle, his reading of the biblical texts shows that most of his allegorical interpretations are so far-fetched as to pollute the authentic meanings of the biblical texts. Nevertheless, his bible-oriented life along with his awakened spirituality is highly significant in that it created a radical value to follow Christ immediately as bold as possible.

한국의 신약학 발전을 위해 이 땅에서 기독교의 역사와 함께 전개된 선배 신앙인/학인들의 성서 읽기의 사례를 발굴하고 자리매김하는 작업이 필요하다. 본 논문은 한국의 기독교 역사에서 토착적인 신앙과 영성의 실천적 구현으로 ‘성자’처럼 살았던 이세종의 생애와 성서 읽기를 신약성서의 얼개와 주제를 중심으로 재구성하고 평가하는 데 초점을 맞추고 있다. 그가 ‘쪽복음’을 접하면서 시작한 성서 읽기는 단순한 묵상의 소재가 아니라 그의 삶 가운데 즉각적인 실천으로 발현되었다. 특히 그의 회심 체험은 그에게 자신의 소유를 온전히 비워내는 케노시스의 영성으로 발전해나 갔고, 만유의 뭇 생명을 향한 하나님의 보편적인 긍휼을 발견하는 생명신학적 비전과 생태주의적 관점의 성서 읽기로 심화되었다. 특히 신약성서의 신학적 얼개에 비추어보면 그의 성서읽기는 예수의 대속적 고행을 축으로 그를 온전히 닮고자 한 바울신학의 imitatio Christi 사상, 혈통 중심의 가족을 해체·탈피하여 그리스도 안에서 영적인 연대로서 가족을 재구성하고자 한 예수의 familia Dei 사상, 나아가 철저한 금욕주의 신앙의 바탕 위에서 민족의 역사적 고통에 공감하고자 한 저항적인 탈세속주의 신앙으로 특징지어진다. 그러나 세세한 성서구절의 의미를 풀이하면서 그의 성서해석은 종종 과도한 알레고리적 독법으로 선회하는데 이는 오늘날의 관점에서는 물론 동시대의 이용도, 유영모/함석헌, 김교신 등과 비교해 볼 때도 왜곡 내지 오류라고 볼 수밖에 없는 무리한 해석으로 판단된다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그의 성서읽기는 그의 영성수련과 신앙실천의 차원에서 신약성서 신학의 핵심적 유산을 잘 포착하여 심오한 ‘급진성’을 구현한 것으로 평가된다.
