“I’m naturally active, but I’m inherently depressed.” ChangYao(1936-2000) thought that his nature did not harmonize with his nature.
The poet, who had a lively inner depression, overcame his unfortunate history and returned to the scene of life. But everything in life broke him and he passed away.
In this paper, I looked at several issues surrounding ChangYao and his poetry.
ChangYao was drawn to the battlefield and the northwestern plateau by his “self-extraction complex.” ChangYao maintained the “communist utopia complex” and “political complex” for a considerable period of time despite political difficulties.
However, the upheaval in Chinese society since the 1980s overshadowed Chang Yao’s “political complex” and “leftist” temperament. After returning to literary circles and society, he became aware of the “tragicness” of life deeper than his complex.
After the 1980s, Chang Yao constantly rewrote his past poems. Chang Yao’s ‘rewriting’ - meaning strict self-reflection of himself and his beginnings - causes considerable complexity in evaluating his poems.
Since the mid-1990s, ChangYao’s poems have changed into essay forms. Chang Yao did not think that the line should be divided. His prose poems are a departure from the traditions of modern Chinese poetry. It is also related to the intention of breaking down and expanding the boundaries of modern poetry.
