This paper analyses probable causes and consequences of intra-party crises in two leading political parties, the PDP and APC, in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic 20 years after its commencement in 1999. Conflict is inevitable in interpersonal relationships and especially within political parties in view of diverse interests including power, influence and other resources. Unresolved conflicts often degenerate into crises which impede good governance, the primary purpose of democracy. Issues of deology, internal party democracy, clientele politics and politics of personality, incessant defections and party switching dominate the analyses. The paper relies on secondary data for its conceptual and theoretical contents, while events analyses by the author partly provide primary data. This is complemented by interviews with selected top officials of the PDP and APC, as well as officials of the party monitoring units of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Selected documents, including newspaper editorials and reports on political party related litigations, are content analysed as part of the primary data. The paper deploys explanations on the abuse of public positions and resources as well as its consequences no the performance of regulatory agencies, which are found in the patrimonialist and prebendalist perspectives, for its analytic frame.
