Blaise Pascal’s Pensées is a Christian apologetics that resists the anti-Christian thoughts painted in an anthropocentric trend of the 17th century. In other words, this book is intended to apologize to those without faith that the true religion is only christianity. All of the theological systems of thought in Pascal’s Pensées as a Christian apologetics are attributed to Jesus Christ. In this regard, Jesus Christ is not but Pascal’s epistemological basis, but the general concept of a Christian apologetics. Therefore, this study aims to organize and systematize his christology through the understanding of Christ in Pascal’s Pensées.
The results of the study are as follows: first, Pascal’s Pensées establishes Jesus Christ at the center of all things and the purpose of all things for the purpose of oriented christocentric theology. In his theology, Christ is the epistemological basis for identifying causes of all existence. Second, for Pascal, the true mediator is only Jesus Christ. In this way, he deals with the theology of the mediator in Pensées. Without the mediator, Jesus Christ, not only cannot God and man be united, but man cannot recognize God, and all fellowship with God is cut off. Therefore, in Pascal’s theology, the mediator Jesus Christ, is regarded as ‘middle’. Third, in Pensées, Pascal constructs Christ as the God who humbled himself in kenotic(kenosis) christology. His kenotic christology is based on the Apostle Paul’s kenotic christology. Jesus Christ, who humbled himself and submitted himself to death, is just ‘Christ crucified’ (1 Cor. 1:23). Finally, Pascal’s christology explores theologia crucis . His theologia crucis is based on Martin Luther’s tradition of theologia crucis, who inherited the theology of the apostle Paul. For Pascal, Christ’s death for us on the cross is the death of the Atonement.
On the other hand, in the Christology that Pascal pursues, the double composition as the dual concept is importantly considered and constructed. For example, the cross and resurrection, the lowering and exaltation of Christ, the divinity and humanity, the suffering and glory of Christ, judgment and love, greatness and lowliness of Christ etc. Here, Pascal consistently uses tools of dialectical interpretation. For this reason, the ‘source of contradiction’(these) disappears from the horizon of the christology in Pascal’s Pensées, and the ‘resolve of contradiction’ (anti-these) is established in a new form in Jesus Christ(syn-these) to achieve reconciliation, synthesis, and integration. In conclusion, in Pascal’s christology, Jesus Christ is only the subject of dialectical integration.
