This study focuses on ‘A Certain Woman’ of Arishima Takeo and figures out how the memories related to the mind and body of the main female character, Yoko, have a relationship with her self identity. Also the study considers what kind of female image that the author attempted to depict. The life of Yoko was a continuum of quarrels and conflicts due to a mismatch of mind and body at school, family and family system. At the time, dating was strictly limited to Platonic love, so Arishima also regarded a woman with an open sexual relationship as licentious. That is, it was too early to relate the freedom of dating to the freedom of sex, and it still suggested that women who had an affair should be punished. To rephrase such, the traditional, obedient women are naturally highlighted in contrast to women with messy sex life, who died with social disease. The main character Yoko is a very talented woman who can even speak English, however, she relies on Kimura and Kurachi and never tries to gain economic independence. She considers the love with Kurachi as ‘true love’ and has a fantasy in love. But she showed the limit as not achieving her dream and discouraged. In conclusion, through this study could figure that identity does not maintain invariance, endurance, and uniformity but heterometrical and flowable.
