This study examines the rhythm issue of modern verse in Sijo poems with poet Youn Kum-Cho"s verse in Sijo. In general, the traditional form that Sijo possesses is ‘the fixed form’. However, the form of Sijo must be modified and itself transformed to secure the modernity. Yun Kum-Cho attempted a variety of experiments with the form to find a suitable rhythm for poems without following the existing Sijo format while establishing the period of constitution with the modern verse in Sijo of the 1960s. In particular, while focusing on the fact that the rhythm of modern Sijo closely matches the image, he tried to maximize the possibility of the genre of Sijo. He presented the “Open Sijo” style that overcomes the existing formal constraints which Sijo have, and visualized the meaning of the poem by grouping the method of the line segment. Also, it showed the dynamics of multiplying the text through the Saseol Sijo, which deviates from the existing rhythm of conventional Sijo and forms the lengthenization. This paper confirms how Sijo acquired the rhythm through the Youn Kum-Cho"s verse in Sijo, which gets as far as possible from the traditional rhythm of ‘the fixed form’. Modern Sijo is constantly raising questions in order to secure a poetic rhythm in a certain form, while clearly recognizing the limitations of "the fixed form" called "tradition".
