This study purports to trace the origins of the Ukrainian nationalism in the late 18th and early 19th century Ukraine, with particular attention to Istoriia rusov, the first “declaration of the rights of the Ukrainian nation.” In this study, I argue that Istoriia rusov is actually written as “a declaration of the rights of the Cossack elite” in the Cossack Hetmanate, in order to justify their estate privileges in the name of the ancient Cossack freedom, an ironic move that contradicts their de facto deCossackized status as a privileged szlachta. By liking the szlachta present with the Cossack past and with the Kievan legacy, Istoriia rusov creates a new historical discourse of genealogy legitimizing Little Russia as the “authentic Rus’,” based upon a putative historical linage from the ancient Rus’, the Kievan Rus’, and the Cossack Hetmanate to the contemporary Little Russia. It is this new historical genealogy that marks the beginning of the Ukrainian nationalism by galvanizing its eventual evolution from a “declaration of the rights of the Cossack elite” in Little Russia to a “declaration of those of the Ukrainian nation.”
