This paper investigates the origin and lexicalization path of the conjunction 以及, by analyzing its occurrences in Archaic, Medieval, and Modern Chinese texts.
Originally, 以及was not a constituent. It was a postposition+verb, as used in 忧以及其身“with grief, reaches one’s own body”. The postposition 以was grammaticalized into a conjunction, following a grammaticalization path that is common cross-linguistically. As a conjunction, 以frequently appears in the form [Verb1+Object1]+以S-AND+[及verb2+Object2]. As 以 and 及appear adjacently in this construction, 以S-AND+及verb2 was subsequently reanalyzed as a conjunction (as in [A以及B]). Consequently, the syntactic structure changed to [Verb+[Object1+以及NP-AND+Object2]]. In this reanalyzed structure, the Verb governs not only Object 1, but also Object 2.
In Archaic and Medieval times, 以及was interpreted as Postposition+Verb or S-AND+Verb in the majority of cases. There are only a handful of occurrences of 以及used as a conjunction during those periods.
In the Modern period, there occurred a drastic change in terms of the usages of 以及. The patterns that previously appeared frequently in Archaic and Medieval Chinese, such as [以postposition+及verb], [以S-AND+及verb], and 是以/何以/可以/足以+[及+object] completely died out as the colloquial language replaced the written language. Especially in Qing times, the frequency of 以及used as a conjunction increased drastically, and its usages were fully developed as they appear in modern Chinese. That is, [A以及B] not only appears in the object position, but also occurs in the topic, subject, adverb, and complement positions, as well as in the modifier. It not only links noun phrases, but also links verb phrases and even sentences.
