This study investigated the effect of 16-week resistance exercise program on daily living fitness in elderly women aged over 85. The exercise program was assigned 1 hour twice a week for 16 weeks to improve the strength and daily living fitness of the elderly. A total of 34 subjects were recruited from 21 women aged over 71 (age period: 71 to 77) and 13 women aged 85 or older (age period: 86 to 97). As a result of body composition, the skeletal muscle mass of the elderly women aged over 71 increased significantly, while the skeletal muscle mass of the aged women aged over 85 significantly decreased and showed differences between groups after the 16-week exercise program. There was no significant difference in body circumference after exercise program and between groups. The factors of daily living fitness showed significant change after exercise program, but only 2-min step test showed significant difference between groups. In conclusion, this study suggests that the exercise program of elderly women over 85 years old may delay the decrease in muscle strength, although it did not induce a significant increase in muscle strength. For further studies, it seems necessary to carry out an accurate observation into elderly women"s exercise types, various periods of exercise, life pattern and even their diets, which is different from the research subjects for this study.
