This study was conducted to evaluate the economic value of a virtual reality sports experience center as local public goods and to provide basic data to suggest the validity of the distribution and operation of the center as a public institution"s athletic policy. To accomplish the study purposes, the study used a contingent valuation method (CVM) survey with a total of 414 D metropolitan city residents over 20 years old who could have the capability to pay tax. The data were analyzed through SPSS 22.0. A binary logistic regression was modeled with a dichotomous dependent variable, willing to pay (WTP). The independent variables such as gender, age, occupation, income, sports club activation and participation, policy interest, and socio-cultural value were input in the model. The economic value of the virtual reality sports experience center was also estimated by using a model suggested by previous studies for CVM. Accordingly, following main findings are derived from the study. First, among the independent variables, gender, income, sports club activation and participation, and socio-cultural value were found to be the significant factors to WTP. Second, the mean amount of WTP was calculated as 2,397 won per person and the percentage of WTP was 75.1%. The economic value of the virtual reality sports experience center was estimated as 22.24 billion won. Lastly, for non-payment reasons, ‘High recommended amount’ showed the highest frequency, followed by ‘Local government budget usage’, ‘Not joining a sports club’, and ‘No financial leeway’.
