The objective of this study is to investigate the aim of Soo-Dang Lee, Nam Kyu’s consciousness through his essays. In this study, his aim of consciousness is divided into two, which are one through his lower class people’s life and the other through his life as a politician. Through the righteous behavior of his three maid servants and the words of a thief who came to steal at his house, he showed the maid servants’ righteous and brave behavior for their master even though they were the female and lowest class people who did not learn Confucianism. Concerning a thief, Lee, Nam Kyu considers a thief as a person who can do the right thing if the situation improves since he steals due to his current bad external situation. It is thought that Lee, Nam Kyu gives a warning signal to the intellectuals of the time who lived with Lee, Nam Kyu by showing that the lower class people are better than the upper class people. Lee, Nam Kyu points out the incompetence of the politicians and the Confucian scholars through Heo-Hyung’s Go-Sa, and he hopes their reflections on themselves. That is for them to comprehend their duties correctly and understand the legitimacy of the teaching of the sages. Lee, Nam Kyu claims that this is the way to save a country.
