Maitreya Religion is represented by shàngshēng(上生) belief returning to Tusita and xiàshēng(下生) belief enter Nirvana after listening to Lónghuásānhuí-shuōfǎ (龍華三會說法, 3 times of Buddhist preaching under Yonghwa tree) by advented Maitreya. An issue focused in this study was how the Maitreya Religion of Tang Dynasty can be interpreted in the viewpoint of Sangha. This study purposed to find the Buddha image making, religion activities and Maitreya Religion to be realized by means of these out of the viewpoints of classifying Maitreya Religion into Maitreya shàngshēng and xiàshēng, otherwise, eventual single completion of Maitreya shàngshēng and xiàshēng. The following points were checked through this study. First, Maitreya Religion during Tang era was unfolded by the monks of various sects in line with earlier times of Tang era not limited only to monks of Fǎxiāngzōng(法相宗). Especially, it was known that Maitreya Religion of Sangha concentrated tremendously to ‘Maitreya shàngshēng belief’. In addition, it pointed out that Maitreya Religion in Tang era had been interpreted newly on the basis of Kuījī(窺基)'s "Guān-Mílèshàngshēngdōulǜtiānjīngzàn(觀彌勒上生兜率天經讚)" Second, this study backs up the precedent studies that the images of seated statue of Maitreya had been found before Tang era, but it was positioned for image of Tang era's Maitreya statue. This study regarded that such background of positioning was by political movements rather than Buddhistic academy impact.
