This article aimed to explore Koryeo Buddhist culture through Bo-An cave temple and Maehyang monument located in Sa-cheon. Sa-cheon’s provincial status was promoted to Sa-ju to designate it as a King’s birth town during King Hyun-Jong’s reign in the mid Koryeo Dynasty.
Bo-An cave temple, like a stone chamber tomb, is a man-made cave which is rarely seen during the Koryeo dynasty period. Bo-An cave temple, did show some elements of mid-Koryeo traditions. The Mongol Yuan dynasty’s influence was not found. According to ‘Seobongsa Sa-jug’, stone statues of Maitreya represented the wish for rebirth in the Buddhist world of harmony. It was re-built as a monastic temple in the late Chosun period.
Maehyang is a product of Buddhist culture concerning village community activities. It appeared in coastal villages the late Koryeo/early Chosun period. The purpose of Maehyang was to get incense for Buddhist offerings. The Maehyang monument in Sa-cheon contained rich Buddhist thoughts and 4,100 people were involved in the ritual. Wishes in the monument were well wishes for the King, the stabilization of the country, and peace for people. As such, in the chaotic period of the late Koryeo period, it served for the local community’s religious and social roles, rather than the purpose of getting incense itself.
The Sa-cheon’s Buddhist remains, Bo-An cave temple and Maehyang monument, can be seen in relation to Maitreya belief. In view from Maitreya belief, both indicate a way to the Buddhist world of harmony. Individual Buddhist training in Bo-An cave temple would lead to the Buddhist world. The Maehyang monument represents the community’s wish for the Buddhist world (country’s stabilization).
