This study analyzed the effects of family meals on the nutrition knowledge and dietary behavior of high school students in Seoul and Gyonggi-do region. This study focused on nutrition knowledge, dietary behavior, dietary habits and food intakes pattern. Out of 218 subjects, 115(52.8%) were male and 103(47.2%) were females. The average of the number of family meals was 3.09 a week. The more the number of family meals was accompanied, the more experience they had in nutrition education(p<0.001), and the more the number of students who received nutrition education from nutritionists(teachers)(p <0.05), and the more recognized that breakfast was very important(p<0.001). The group with the higher number of family meals had a regular meal (p <0.05) and did not skip the meal and did not skip the breakfast(p <0.01). The group with the higher number of family meals had more breakfast(p <0.01) and more frequent snack intake(p <0.05). In the group with more than the average number of family meals, the group scored a higher score in “Efforts to try food that has not been eaten before” (p <0.05) and “Try to eat food evenly” (p <0.01).
In this study, the number of family meals increased, which had a good influence on correct dietary behaviors, dietary habits, and food intake patterns. Family meals have many positive effects on adolescents" emotional stability and psychological adaptation, and have a good effects on their children"s dietary behaviors. Therefore, the importance of family meals should be recognized by adolescents and parents to increase the number of family meals possible. In order to encourage the frequency of family meal in dual-income families, the food industry should develop and promote family meal set and HMR(home meal replace) food for the efficient setting up a table.
