Both scholars of Korean history and Christianity have usually interpreted the forced Shinsa (神社) worship during the colonial period as the dissemination of state Shinto ideology. According to them, state Shinto is defined as a dogma of invasion, a tool for obliterating Korean culture, a religious ritual for the policy of assimilation, and a vanguard of historical distortion. For many Koreans, accordingly, state Shinto came to be seen as an amalgam of Japanese Shinto and militarism on the one hand, and Shins a as a symbol of Japanese imperialism on the other hand. Taking this historical assessment as a starting point, this article deals with the problem of state Shinto and Shinsa worship by analyzing the discourse of religion and the issue of national identity related with Otherness. The main questions I will address are as follows: What does the Japanese insistence of the non-religious nature of Shinto mean? What is the difference between the 'religions' when Koreans (especially Christians) say Shinto 'is a religion' and when Japanese say Shinto 'is not a religion'? What does it mean for Koreans by the loss of the Other which resulted from the nationalism of state Shinto?
