From the biblical times to modern times, even to the founding of Israel in 1948, questions concerning Israelite identity have been constantly raised which could not be easily answered. Israel has been very complex societies in terms of her historical and ethnic perspective.
According to the biblical traditions, beginning with the patriarch Abraham’s call Israel is described as both a faith community and a national one consisted of 12 tribes that were derived from another patriarch Jacob’s 12 sons. At the same time, many texts in the Old Testament show directly or indirectly that various ethnic elements were included in that community: the marriage of the main characters and foreigners (e.g. Joseph and Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On; Moses and Zipporah the daughter of Jethro priest of Midian and an Ethiopian woman; David and Maachah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; Solomon’s foreign wives, etc.), foreign officials in Israel’s royal court(Saul’s servant Doeg, an Edomite; David’s mercenary soldiers the Cherethites, the Pelethites, and the Gittites, etc.) and stipulations of the law concerning to foreigners(the prohibition of foreigners, Exod. 22:20, 23:9; Sabbath Regulations caring the stranger, that is foreigner, Exod. 23:12; cf. the mention to foreigner 18 times in Deuteronomy, etc.). All these suggest that ancient Israelite society was, in fact, a multicultural society proper!
The same situation is true of modern Israel, the newborn nation which is consisted of Jewish immigrants from all over the world. This country has an inevitable obligation to care for and to protect these immigrants as her fundamental purpose. This duty and purpose presupposed the task of integrating diverse immigrants who have lived in different backgrounds, such as various cultures, languages, and history from all over the world into a people and even into the Jewish people, besides, to solve the conflict between Jewish people and neighboring Arabic.
I suggest that Israel has experienced a multicultural society early and for a long time as well. In this regard, this study examines the revival process of modern Hebrew, which is regarded as a representative example that contributed to integrating the multicultural society that modern Israel faced. Based on the efforts of the Jews who have tried to solve the problems in that process, I would like to present insights for our society which has already entered into a multicultural society.
