The purpose of this paper is to look at the ways in which the oracles deals with the priest in the final form of the book of Jeremiah, and to show the redactional intention presented by the oracles in relation to the postexilic Judaean community. Based on the investigation of the textual features and the main phrases of the oracles denouncing the priest from the perspective of redaction criticism, as well as comparisons of MT and LXX, this study is concerned about the change of priesthood in postexilic period. Though scholars mainly focused on the polemics against the prophets, this study concentrates upon the attitudes towards the priests closely related to the prophets within the book of Jeremiah.
As a result of this investigation, in the final form of book of Jeremiah the oracles referring to the priests are characterized as follows: First, the oracles never denounce the priests alone but always together with one other group of leaders of Judah, which tends to weaken the critique of the priest on the whole. Second, the most oracles imply a close relationship between the priests and the prophecy. Third, the oracles against the priest never condemn the priestly cultic duties proper. Furthermore, the oracles referring to the priests alone are favorable towards the priesthood. Fourth, the condemnation of the oracles focuses on the roles of the priests as leaders, and teachers who bear the responsibility for the fall of Judah. All of these suggest new social changes in the priesthood that appeared in postexilic Judah in which the priest has officially incorporated the prophecy into their priestly office in the cult of Jerusalem temple as can be seen in the book of 1 Chronicles 25:1-3.
