This study investigates the nature of Chilkwong(七狂) and Siphyeon(十賢), the background to painting the Chilkwong-do, and examines the landscape of Gohyonnea of Taeingun of Jeollabukdo Province in the early 1900s. Originally Chilkwong-do was painted by Song Mingo, a member of the Chilkwong group, in 1610, and then, in 1910, ChaeYong-Sin, a famed painter during the late period of the Korean Empire, painted Chilkwong-do, portraying the ancients affairs of Chilkwong as remained in Taein.
According to related literary works, epitaphs, land registration maps during the Japanese colonial period, and photographs, Chilkwong-do described the landscape of the time truthfully. Most subjects are painted in correct locations including Husongjeong, Songjeong, Youngdang, standing Buddhist statue, Hohojeong Yuheobi, Yusangdae, Yeonsigak, Namcheonsa, Taesansa, as well as MuseongSeoweon.
Chilkwong-do accurately portrayed events of the time, and is an excellent material for research on local history and understanding of the landscape of the time, which is difficult due to limited availability of historical records. It can also help restore and reproduce the original form of MuseongSeoweon, a UNESCO cultural heritage.
