In celebration of the 500th anniversary(2019) of the Reformation of Ulrich Zwingli (1484-1531), future Zwingli studies should be based on what he intended and should be understood on the basis of his own premises. In this context, this article studies about Zwingli’s own work, which was published relatively early in the following year (1524) of the Second Zurich controversy (October 26-28, 1523). Through Zwingli’s writing, “Eine treue und ernstliche Vermahnung an die Eidgenossen (A faithful and serious admonition to the Confederates”, this article considers Zwingli’s theology on the Social Ethics.
In order to understand Zwingli ‘s Social Ethics, I research the political and religious situation of the Swiss federation and Europe in the early 16th century. In April 1524, Zwingli presented an innovative direction of how the Swiss federal government could face the crisis when the Catholic region of the Swiss Confederation chose to challenge the spirit of religious reform and threaten the wellbeing of Swiss society. Zwingli urged them to use the liberty given by God not to selfishly use it but to protect the freedom of faith. According to Zwingli, the Swiss Confederation can live a peaceful life if Switzerland truly repents and seeks God’s grace. For this religious foundation, Zwingli claimed that the Swiss society should honor labor, prohibit bribery and cultivate the land honestly. He also stressed that by abolishing the mercenary system, the society should not be divided and dismantled. At that time, the mercantile system was abused for the wealth of Switzerland in the confused political struggles of the Holy Roman Empire and France. Zwingli has drawn the theology of the Word of God as a driving force for the reformation of the Swiss Confederation. A life that forsakes selfishness, seeks God’s glory, and benefits its neighbors begins with the proclamation of God’s Word. The Swiss Confederation should proclaim the Word of God “not distorted but according to its original will” in order to lead a peaceful life in the will of God. The crisis of the Swiss Confederation will be overcome by those who fear God. Zwingli emphasized that when listening to God’s Word, God would open the future of the Swiss Confederation. Zwingli’s theology of the Word of God towards the realities of the Swiss Confederation and society is giving a great lesson to the Korean church and society today.
