This paper is an exploration of gender-binarised accounts on care in Edith Wharton’s Ethan Frome. It demonstrates how the novel innovatively reverses the conventional gender roles in relation to care, characterizing Ethan From as a caregivier, and his wife Zeena Frome, as a care recipient. Caregiving masculinity takes center stage in the novel as its protagonist Ethan struggles to assert his male identity in the tragic circumstances that he finds himself in. To make this case, the critical and theoretical work of Niall Hanlon et al. and Jacques Lacan will be utilized, in particular, the Lacanian definition of masculinity in a socio-cultural structure and Hanlon’s concept of caregiving masculinity. However, unlike the work of many other critics who have tended to overlook and disparage Zeena, this paper offers a new interpretation of her as a care recipient. In fact, the novel shows how dominant discourse devalues care work, relegating it to the private sphere. Also the novel plainly illuminates how female care recipients, who are not able to fulfill the roles of a housekeeper and a wife, are illustrated in the conventional view of gender role; and how men, as caregivers are ironically treated as ‘domestic heroes’ in the private sphere, while suffering anxiety about demasculization. In this respect, through a close reading of Ethan Frome, this paper aims to demonstrate how gendered discourse devalues care and, subsequently, proscribes men’s care work. Ultimately, the result of the study in this context will become mirror-like, reflecting the problematic reality of care, and will open up the possibility to improve the status of care in this era.
