After the forceful annexation of Korea in 1910, the imperial government of Japan attempted to reorganize the medical field i n J oseon t o c enter a round t he W estern a nd M odern medicine, as it did had in Japan. The beginning of such this move was to the establishment of the ‘euisaeng (醫生)’ system in November 1913. In response, the Traditional medical circle in Joseon convened the a national convention of doctors in 1915, and, in the same year, organized the national medical society, called Jeonseoneuihoi (全鮮醫會). Also, starting with ‘Hanbang euiyakgye (漢方醫藥界)’ in 1913, the society began publishinged academic journals, including ‘Dongseo euihakbo (東西醫學報)’ and ‘Joseon euihakgye (朝鮮醫學界)’, in a bid to fight policies imposed by the Japanese imperial government and to modernize the Traditional medicine at the same time. With the dichotomy of in medicine, doctors of the Traditional medicine were treated as a lower class of doctor or euisaeng, and they endeavored to show that the Traditional medicine was by no means inferior to the Western medicine. They tried to reestablish the authority of the Traditional medicine, and these efforts progressed as the times changed and the field of medicine matured academically. They rediscovered and reclaimed the usefulness of the Traditional medicine from the historical context, and particularly emphasized ‘dongeui (東醫)’ to highlight the uniqueness of the Traditional medicine practiced in Joseon. Later, jungseohoitong (中西匯通), advocated by Dang Jonghae (唐宗海), was introduced to blend Traditional medicine with Western medicine. These endeavors led to the establishment of the Research Society of Eastern and Western Medicine in 1924, and gave a momentum for to the movement to revitalize the Traditional medicine that took place in the 1930s.
