This paper analysed Guwen movement that has been studied as a literary thought in terms of Rhetoric.
First, Guwen movement emphasized that literary works was to clarify moral principles (道). This consciousness of 明道(Ming-dao) can be compared with the logos that prove the thesis of speech in Rhetoric. 明道and logos lead the central context in literary works and reach the goals of edification and persuasion respectively. The elements have something in common. However, the difference is that logos pursues logical words and 明道pursues moral words, Rhetoric seeks to speak well in speech and Guwen movement seeks good words in literary works .
Guwen movement also asserted the necessity of "moral discipline" in terms of internal manifestations. This is a view of identifying literary works with a person and can be connected with ethos, which refers to the speaker"s character in Rhetoric. In Rhetoric, however, the relationship between speech and ethos is not as close as that of literary works and moral discipline in Guwen movement. In Guwen movement, the author"s level of discipline and the quality of the sentence are the same, but in Rhetoric, the speaker"s Ethos and speech quality are not necessarily identical.
Guwen movement embodied the criticism of reality in literary works. It played an active role for social edification with the consciousness of "不平则鸣", which makes a sound if it is unstable. The criticism of reality in Guwen movement are in line with fathos, which appeals to the emotions of the audience in Rhetoric seeks to change readers and audiences. The difference is that the criticism reality in Guwen movement seeks change based on morality, whereas the pathos in Rhetoric focus on change itself rather than morality.
