Chinese language has a unique structure, rhetoric exists in various aspects of Chinese lives. This is also the frustration faced by Chinese learners as a second language. Korean students rarely use figures of speech when they talk to Chinese people. They have learnt a lot of adjectives which are employed in Chinese rhetoric such as idioms, allusions, four-character words, metaphor, and exaggeration. If the single word be taken from them, we can understand its meaning. This means that we could recite the words, but could not freely use them according to the context of the situation. The typical phenomena are, first, to avoid the use of rhetoric; second, to inappropriately apply rhetoric in daily language use. However, the common goal of both teachers and students should be to deploy figures of speech, appropriately, clearly, smoothly, in order to more accurately express ideas and emotions.
This article is aimed at a university Chinese department in Korea nearly one hundred writing compositions of the senior students in korean undergraduate rhetorical errors. It analyze the errors made by Korean students in the language section of the chapter phenomenon and modified method.
