Report Errors

In order to clarify the nature of Chinese rhetoric, this study examined the essence of ancient Chinese rhetoric and the current state of modern Chinese rhetoric, through the prism of a comparison with Western rhetoric. On this basis, it is argued that in the Chinese tradition rhetoric was defined as the adjustment or application of language for the transmission of thoughts or emotions. Through the analysis of the etymology of this conceptualization, it is clear that rhetoric was not simply a tool of verbal expression in ancient China, as it was also perceived as an ethical tool employed to express moral injunctions for the purpose of edification. And through the analysis of several theories on Chinese rhetoric, this study found that it was based on the ancient native rhetorical tradition rather than on Western forms of rhetoric, and provided the foundation for the establishment of academic rhetoric.
