Anthropocene is in vogue in Korean society. Anthropocene refers to a new geological epoch where humans emerge as the earth-changing force. This geological concept has been widely discussed amongst social scientists and humanity scholars since the mid-2000s when a group of earth system scientists and geologists proposed it. This paper aims to provide an overview of social science discussions of the Anthropocene with a view of energizing the Korean scholarship of environmental social sciences. We begin by introducing the development of the concept by geologists and earth system scientists in the early 2000s. We outline three different but related social science approaches to the Anthropocene by discussing earth system governance, critical political economy, and new materialism. Then we consider the potential of the Anthropocene as a new and innovative framework to create an intellectual rupture to the existing modernist approaches. Finally, we identify four specific areas for future research from which Anthropocene studies can be developed. We argue that the Anthropocene offers an experimental, speculative and future-oriented framework for environmental knowledge production.
