Examined in this article is the murder of Kim Hong-jib, who held many important posts inside the Joseon government, and more importantly had deeply been involved in all the reforms that continued since the early days of king Gojong’s reign and through the Gabo-reform period. Yet he was killed at the secret order of no other than Gojong himself, and Hanseong Shinbo, which was a de-facto press for the Japanese authorities and served their trampling on Joseon sovereignty, released a series of reports that were classic cases of blatantly distorting the truth.
After moving himself to the Russian legation because of his queen’s death at the hands of the Japanese, Gojong discreetly ordered the assassination of Kim Hong-jib and Jeong Byeong-ha, who were both masterminds of the aforementioned Gabo-reform. Domestic records which documented how they were killed reported that the officers of the Gyeongmu-cheong police smashed their shoulders and heads several times till they died, and after their corpses were displayed in public, the angry crowd stoned their remains, resulting in further damages on their respective extremities. Yet the situation is described quite differently in the Japanese Legation reports. Such records reported that several policemen jumped on those two all at once and slashed their bodies, and that the people who later stoned and even mashed their corpses were Bobusang merchants. Then Hanseong Shinbo even went one step further, by providing a rather exaggerated story that the people not only more damaged their bodies, but ate their severed limbs as well.
It becomes clear that Hanseong Shinbo used Kim Hong-jib’s death as an opportunity to paint a picture on the Korean people as a savage race. The reason for resorting to such a blatant exaggeration in its depiction of the incident was to make the world believe that Korea was so uncivilized it was in dire need to be protected and guided by the now fully enlightened Japan.
