The Sewol Ferry tragedy of South Korea understandably received extensive press coverage but incorrect reporting, distorted and sensational reports caused victims of the disaster to avoid and condemn journalists, labelling them "Giregi(scum??reporters)". The impact of this tragic incident was exacerbated by its reporting. This article examines the reality of the shambolic reporting of Sewol and analyses the cause of it.
The tragedy had a nation??wide adverse effect on Korean society and the number of reports and news broadcasts about the Sewol Ferry tragedy is huge. Therefore, in order to understand the tenor of this information representative cases of five different categories from the Korea Broadcasting Journalist Association (KBJA), "Reports of Sewol Ferry tragedy, the sinking of Journalism",are used in this analysis.
These examples all show a pro-government bias regardless of their form or content, and this article identifies the root cause of the disastrous reporting of Sewol in the power-friendly structure of the Korean media rather than in the general standard of reporting. Aspects of direct domination of media by the authorities, changes to the press and broadcasting system, and the growth of authority-friendly comprehensive programming TV channels,are examined. It is concluded that structural reform of the media is urgently needed in order to prevent a recurrence of the disastrous type of reporting that followed in the aftermath of the Sewol Ferry tragedy.
