The purpose of this article is to examine the bibliography, content, and meaning of Jang Deok-jo"s novel, Sibjalo, which has not been reported in the academic world. I have the book and I want to contribute to the research of Jang, Deok-jo literature.
Although female writer Jang Deok-jo(1914-2003) has left a number of works, but we do not even have a basic bibliography and data acquisition for the whole work. Notably, the bibliography, which was specifically addressed in this article, was not precisely confirmed, and has not been studied for the loss of serialized weekly magazines and the loss of Sibjalo.
Sibjalo tells us that a female character(Lee, Young-ran) who graduated from the College of English at C College loves a professor of political science(Han, In-jun) and then gives up him and chooses the professor of medical school(Kim, Min-soo), but he eventually chooses a businessman and goes to the United States with him.
Sibjalo is a story in which the romance and conflict of the vested interests of men and women are in the foreground, and it is a story of escape from it and envy of the United States, rather than a confrontation with the reality of Korea. This can be interpreted as the acceptance of aid and the escape from the painful reality of Korea at that time, and her attitude toward Japanese imperialism was replaced by the United States.

이 연구는 그동안 학계에 보고되지 않은 장덕조 장편소설 『十字路』(文星堂, 1953)에 대한 서지, 내용, 의미 등을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 필자는 단행본 『십자로(十字路)』를 소장하고 있어, 장덕조 문학 연구에 기여하고자 이 연구를 통해 학계에 보고하고자 하였다. 여류작가 장덕조(1914-2003)는 적지 않은 작품을 남겼음에도 불구하고 우리 문학사에서는 평가가 인색할 뿐 아니라, 작품 전체에 대한 서지 파악과 자료 확보가 덜되어 있는 상황이다. 특별히 이 글에서 다룬 단행본 『십자로(十字路)』는 서지 사항이 정확하게 확정되어 있지 않을 뿐 아니라, 연재 주간지 소실 및 단행본 소실로 연구가 미흡하였다.
『십자로(十字路)』는 1949년 12월 5일(?)부터 1950년 6월 26일(?) 사이에 『주간서울』에 연재되었을 것으로 추정되며, 이후 한국전쟁 와중인 1953년 2월 5일 대구에서 단행본으로 출간되었다. 『십자로(十字路)』는 한국전쟁 직전인 1940년대 후반 장편소설로서 장덕조의 문학 세계를 밝히는데 의미 있는 자료라 할 수 있다.
『십자로(十字路)』는 C대학 영문과를 졸업한 여성 인물(이영란)이 정치학 교수(한인준)를 사랑하다가 포기하고 의과대학 교수(김민수)를 선택하게 되지만, 그의 방탕으로 결국 사업가(최한직)를 선택하여 그와 함께 미국으로 간다는 이야기이다.
『십자로(十字路)』는 당시 시대상을 반영하면서 기득권층 남녀 인물들의 연애와 갈등이 전경화된 이야기로서, 당대 한국 현실과의 대결 의식보다는 그것으로부터의 도피와 미국에 대한 선망의식을 나타낸 소설이라 할 수 있다. 이는 원조의 수용과 당대 한국에서의 ‘고뇌에 찬 현실’로부터의 거리두기이며, 작가의 미국에 대한 태도가 반영된 것이라 해석할 수 있다.
